Freeman's Photographs & Photobooks department handles a range of photographic material including 19th and 20th century photographs, albums, and fine photobooks. Previous sales have included works by artists such as Annie Leibovitz, Edward Curtis, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ansel Adams, and Cindy Sherman.
Recent auctions have offered several interesting groups of material. September 2013 saw a record setting sale of Bert Stern's "The Last Sitting." The portfolio of ten photographs had received quite a bit of media attention over the summer due Stern’s recent death in June 2013 and because of the photographs’ subject - Marilyn Monroe shot just six weeks before her death. This sale also included the one of a kind "Works from the Avon Collection," proceeds of which went to benefit the Avon Foundation for Women, the company’s charitable organization dedicated to breast cancer research and ending domestic violence. This collection consisted of over 90 works by some of the most celebrated female photographers including Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Berenice Abbott, and Sally Mann.
Other recent successes include:
Robert Mapplethorpe's "Lyndia Cheng" which sold for $22,500
Andreas Fenininger "Queen Elizabeth in New York Harbor" achieved $9,375
George Tice "25 Prints of Amish Scenes" brought $18,750
