Recent auctions have featured several interesting groups of material.  A record setting price was set in September 2013 for Bert Stern's iconic portfolio titled "The Last Sitting." Fueled in part by a media frenzy prior to the auction, the portfolio of ten photographs of Marilyn Monroe shot just six weeks before her death soared to a record hammer price of $41,250 . This sale also included photographs from the Avon Collection, proceeds of which benefitted the Avon Foundation for Women, the company’s charitable organization dedicated to breast cancer research and ending domestic violence. This collection consisted of over 90 works by some of the most celebrated female photographers of the 20th century including Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Berenice Abbott, and Sally Mann.

Other recent successes include:

  • Robert Mapplethorpe's "Lydia Cheng" which sold for $22,500
  • Andreas Feininger "Queen Elizabeth in New York Harbor" achieved $9,375
  • A portfolio of 25 prints by George Tice of Amish life sold for $18,750

Our team of specialists and consultants are able to advise on the current market conditions and help clients achieve the best results by reaching bidders world-wide. We welcome consignments of all sizes, from single objects to entire collections, and respond to inquiries with discretion and expertise. Please contact a member of Freeman’s Photographs & Photobooks Department if you wish to discuss purchasing or consigning photographs at auction.
