American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts

Freeman's, America's oldest auction house, is seeking a Property Manager to work with our American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts and 20th Century Design departments. This position reports directly to the Department Head and Specialists.

General Responsibilities

Property Management

• Process all incoming property; prepare consignment receipts, tag new property and enter inventory listing into database, noting any obvious damage or missing parts and indicating measurements, existence of documentation, existence or lack of additional components (certificates of authenticity, multiple pieces, hardware)
• Ensure all property is properly and safely handled, stored and organized by sale/status
• Arrange and oversee restoration of damaged property, as needed
• Notify specialists of incoming property ready to be examined & catalogued
• Relocate rejected property to the appropriate location and change location code
• Remove packing material & trash and order supplies for the department
• Assist other department property managers, as needed
• In lieu of another member of the department, meet with consignors to take in inventory
• Organize furniture stacks, small shelves, ARO racks, etc. and assist department administrators in clearing inventory as requested
• Work closely with specialists and Department Head in devising and implementing new systems to improve the day-to-day running of the department

Shipping Coordination

• Coordinate shipping arrangements (both pick-ups and deliveries): liaise with clients/Operations Crew/third party shippers to schedule pickups/drop-offs, obtain necessary paperwork for shipping, and accompany the crew on pick-ups and assist in packing the material as needed
• Work closely with Property Controller and Operations Crew members to organize and assemble property being released to buyers or being returned to owner, insuring that all components of a lot, including supporting documentation/provenance, are released
• Keep a record of shipping activity and coordinate payment of shipping invoices with shipping coordinator and billing office
• Manage property intended for donation or sale at another auction house, keeping files on release forms for specific property and labeling/sorting them until they leave the building
• Assist Regional Coordinator in overseeing shipments to and from Regional Offices

Exhibitions and Auctions

• Work with the Operations Crew and other staff members to oversee & assist with exhibition/sale set-up and break-down, including the marking of unsold property
• Work with Department Members to plan layout of exhibition, including devising and implementing creative solutions for complicated installations
• Be available during exhibition to assist exhibition staff with client inquiries, and to assist specialists with condition reports
• Assist with installation of window displays for the department


• Experience handling and packing antiques, art, or other high end property
• Excellent customer service skills
• Driver's license
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
• Strong organizational skills

Freeman's, America's oldest auction house, is seeking a graphic designer to develop and create a range of marketing materials including, but not limited to: print and online advertisements, email blasts, invitations, postcards, newsletters, brochures, as well as posters and auction catalogues. The position reports to the Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications and works closely with the Marketing & Communications Manager.

• Create, manage, and produce custom designs/graphic materials from concept stage through finished project, both print or digital
• Responsible for department approvals on deliverables before submitting to media or printers
• Liaise with outside printers to establish printing options, specs, and pricing
• Pre-press production file preparation for print & digital

Required Skills
• 3-5 years of experience
• Adobe Creative Suite, Flash, and knowledge of Quark and Microsoft Office
• Strong attention to detail
• Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously within a fast-paced environment
• Comfortable working with all levels within the organization from dept administrators to senior management; a real collaborator

• Eager to experiment creatively
• Resourceful self-starter
• Able to work within an open floor plan. (Sometimes part of our day is spent with our earbuds in)

Freeman's offers department internships throughout the year. The duration and start time of these internships vary, depending entirely on the needs of the department to which you are applying. In general, internships last approximately four months or the duration of one school semester. Internships are open to students currently enrolled in college (either undergrad or graduate programs), or recent graduates looking to expand their experience. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, solid research skills, an attention to detail and a willingness to get dirty. Familiarity with design programs such as Photoshop is a plus for many departments, as is fluency in Chinese, French, or a Classical Language such as Latin. Those who are eligible to receive academic credit must provide written confirmation on university letterhead at the start of their internship. Freeman's will work with universities directly to provide the appropriate documentation needed in order to receive credit. There is no salary or stipend available for interns at Freeman's at this time, nor is there any guarantee of future employment beyond the dates of the internship.
