Cataloguer/Associate Specialist
Furniture & Decorative Arts

Job Summary:
Working to strict deadlines, the Cataloguer/Associate Specialist will be accountable for the full and accurate writing of lot descriptions for our in-house database and the department’s published auction catalogues. They will hold secondary responsibility for all aspects of their department, utilizing specific expertise to assist in the building & maintenance of an efficient, profitable department that functions in compliance with the company goals and philosophies and shares responsibility for insuring that the department targets and budgets are met.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
·Research property for cataloguing using on-line databases, internet, public and private libraries, and the use of consultants when necessary.
·Ensure that all catalogue descriptions are factually and grammatically correct; coordinating with the Department Head to confirm the accuracy of all catalogue information before going to press.
·Prepare condition reports of department property in Freeman’s database system and provide this information to clients when requested.
·Assist and ensure that all pre- and post-sale administration is carried out efficiently.
·General day-to-day office management.
·Liaise with other specialist departments and the Marketing department to ensure that marketing and advertising targets are met.
·With the property manager, oversee property in and out of the department, and ensure that storage areas are maintained efficiently.
·Ensure that all clients receive the highest level of attention and service.
·Coordinate with other members of the department and the crew chief regarding all aspects of the setting up and breaking down of exhibition displays for auction.
·Participate in telephone bidding with clients on all auction days.
·Provide other assistance and support to Senior Specialist/Department Head as needed.

Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Art History or Decorative Arts categories preferred (or equivalent work experience), a proven interest in antique furniture and decorative arts would be distinctly advantageous, excellent communication skills (oral and written), excellent writing and editing skills, computer literacy with an excellent knowledge of MS office, driver’s license, weekend and evening availability, and the ability to maintain absolute client confidentiality. Some travel may be required, and proficiency in one other European language would be an advantage.

INTERNSHIPS

Samuel T Freeman & Co offers department internships throughout the year (However, at this time we are no longer seeking applicants for the summer of 2013). The duration and start time of each internship varies, depending on the needs of the specific department. In general, internships last approximately four months or the duration of one school semester. Internships are open to students currently enrolled in college (either undergrad or graduate programs), or recent graduates looking to expand their experience. Preference is given to those applicants with language skills (especially Chinese, Spanish, German or Classical Languages). Those who are eligible to receive academic credit must provide written confirmation on university letterhead at the start of their internship. Freeman's will work with universities directly to provide the appropriate documentation needed in order to receive credit. There is no salary or stipend available for interns at Freeman's at this time. The departments available for internship programs are listed below:
