Freeman’s Art and Design sales bring together the best of both worlds from 20th-century production, delighting collectors of furniture, design, and art alike. The department’s September 15 sale was led by a rare four-door “Chan” cabinet by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, which achieved $113,400 against a $30,000 high estimate, and strong demand for furniture by Warren Platner, Richard Artschwager, and Paul László. Jun Kaneko’s Untitled (Dango) achieved $20,160, and Josef Albers’s SP IV (from Homage to the Square) sold for $13,860.
The December 8 sale was dominated by highly sought-after George Nakashima furniture, including three cabinets that sold for $63,000, $53,550, and $40,950, respectively. The sale brought four Tiffany Studios lamps from the Estate of Gabriele Lee to auction, as well as a Tiffany Studios “Groundhog” candlestick that sold for $15,120.
