“An excellent conclusion to Modern and Contemporary Art's 2021 season.”

Freeman’s November 17 Modern and Contemporary Art auction achieved nearly $5M in just 80 lots, led by the sale of a flock of sheep sculptures and one elephant by François-Xavier Lalanne, which altogether achieved a remarkable $2,305,800. The auction also featured eight important sculptures by Harry Bertoia, the top lot of which, Untitled (Study for Fiery Circle) sold for $107,100. Chaïm Soutine’s Le Viaduc Rouge Près de Vence was the sale’s leading canvas at $302,400 (more than doubling its pre-sale high estimate), followed by an untitled work by Ahmed Ben Driss El Yacoubi that achieved $157,500. Works by leading artists from Andy Warhol to Alice Neel commanded high prices following competitive bidding wars in an auction that Head of Sale David Weiss called “an excellent conclusion to Modern and Contemporary Art's 2021 season.”
