American Art Season Ends with a Bang: $5.1M Result and White-Glove Single-Owner Sale

Strong Showing for Pennsylvania Impressionists, with Multiple World Records Broken

Freeman’s December 5 American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists auction realized $5.15M in 119 lots; the auction highlight was the white-glove sale of the esteemed Collection of Virginia and Stuart Peltz, a fresh-to-market selection of Pennsylvania Impressionists that achieved $1.4M.
The auction’s top lot, Daniel Garber’s Sycamores, sold for an impressive $390,600, followed by Edward Redfield’s Abandoned Road, which achieved $352,800. Works of Illustration Art vastly outperformed estimates, like Stevan Dohanos’s Tying Flies (Saturday Evening Post Cover), which achieved $252,000; works by iconic American artists also performed exceptionally well, including Jamie Wyeth’s Saltwater Ice, which achieved $226,800.
From Dohanos and Donald de Lue to Morgan Colt and Kenneth Nunamaker, sale prices from the December 5 auction broke world records for the individual artists. Head of Sale Raphaël Chatroux remarked that the success of the sale “demonstrates two areas in which Freeman’s excels: the market for Pennsylvania Impressionism and single-owner auctions.”

The auction result nearly equaled that of December 2020’s sale, which was the most successful sale of American Art in Freeman’s history.
