On February 2, Freeman’s presents our first Books and Manuscripts auction of 2023, led by two extraordinary pieces of literature and printing history: a presentation copy of Ernest Hemingway’s short story collection in our time inscribed to his future editor Maxwell Perkins, and a rare leaf from the most famous book printed in the West, Johannes Gutenberg’s Bible, from a collection assembled by paper guru Dard Hunter. The sale boasts an array of Martin Luther King, Jr. material from a family close to the Kingsincluding an inscribed copy of the monumental activist’s memoir Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story. In addition to foundational presidential material, Americana, and a broad selection of literary first editions, Books and Manuscripts presents unexpected delights, such as an official NBA basketball signed by the 26 players and coaches of the 1996 All-Star game, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley. Collectors of American countercultural material will be pleased to find an extensive selection in the February 2 sale, with first editions and documents from such notable figures as Charles Bukowski, Timothy Leary, and William S. Burroughs, among others.
