Freeman’s May 17 Modern and Contemporary Art auction is led by Pablo Picasso’s Two-Handled Pitcher, a unique work from a private Philadelphia collection showcasing the best of Picasso’s experiments in ceramics and collaboration with Suzanne and Georges Ramié at the Madoura Pottery studio beginning in 1946. Collectors of the work of Sam Gilliam will be pleased to find a significant work by the innovative abstract colorist in the May 17 sale, a fresh-to-market canvas that has been in the present collector’s family for nearly forty years. Modern and Contemporary Art brings several other notable works to market for the first time, including a large oil on canvas by M.F. Husain, Wolf Kahn’s Violet Woods, and paintings by Bo Bartlett and Grace Hartigan. The upcoming sale features a striking ceramic work, Ha, by the preeminent ceramicist and sculptor Ken Price, as well as exceptional rediscovered works on paper by Salvador Dalí and Alexander Calder.
