American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists Featuring the Papageorge Family Collection is led by two stylistically different but equally striking portraits: the first, Horace Pippin’s Portrait of Major-General Smedley D. Butler, who was the most decorated Marine in United States history at the time of his retirement, and the second, Portrait of Katie McNamara by the Ashcan School pioneer Robert Henri. Additional American Art highlights include an impressive canvas of two moose by German-born American wildlife artist Carl Rungius, a newly rediscovered landscape by N.C. Wyeth set in Maine, and a fresh-to-market, quintessential beach scene by Philadelphia native Martha Walter. Bridging the sale's two sections is the featured Papageorge Family Collection from Carversville, Pennsylvania. The selection of around twenty works is highlighted by a dynamic, Prohibition-era view of the Harlem River by Robert Spencer and fine works by Daniel Garber, John Fulton Folinsbee, and John Singleton Copley. The sale’s Pennsylvania Impressionist section is led by Daniel Garber's In a Wood, presented fresh-to-market, along with two other oils, directly from descendants of the Artist's family. Additional highlights include Fern Coppedge’s The Mill at Bowman’s Hill (October), included in the artist’s first retrospective at the James A. Michener Museum of Art in the 1990s, and six works by Emma Fordyce MacRae of the Philadelphia Ten collective.
