Freeman’s European Art and Old Masters auction is led by William Bouguereau’s 1895 La Fleur Préférée, a quintessential life-size outdoor portrait of a farm girl. The February 14 auction also features James Tissot’s Sur la Plage and a rediscovered canvas by Bouguereau’s longtime student and wife Elizabeth Jane Gardner. The sale offers multiple collecting opportunities for post-Impressionist and neo-Impressionist canvases by distinguished artists from Édouard Léon Cortès to Gustave Loiseau. European Art and Old Masters brings to market works from across the continent, from Scotland, Switzerland, and Norway to Portugal, Germany, and Italy—with works made as early as the 16th century up to the modern period. Collectors will be pleased to find works by towering figures across periods, including a striking, freshly authenticated family portrait by George Romney and works by William Koekkoek, Carlo Dolci, Gustave Doré, and James Ensor.
