On February 2, Freeman’s presents our first Books and Manuscripts auction of 2023, led by two extraordinary pieces of literature and printing history: a presentation copy of Ernest Hemingway’s short story collection in our time inscribed to his future editor Maxwell Perkins, and a rare leaf from the most famous book printed in the West, Johannes Gutenberg’s Bible, from a collection assembled by paper guru Dard Hunter. The sale boasts an array of Martin Luther King, Jr. material from a family close to the Kings, including an inscribed copy of the monumental activist’s memoir Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story. In addition to foundational presidential material, Americana, and a broad selection of literary first editions, Books and Manuscripts presents unexpected delights, such as an official NBA basketball signed by the 26 players and coaches of the 1996 All-Star game, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley. Collectors of American countercultural material will be pleased to find an extensive selection in the February 2 sale, with first editions and documents from such notable figures as Charles Bukowski, Timothy Leary, and William S. Burroughs, among others.
Viewing times
The exhibition will be on view at our 1600 Girard Avenue location from January 23 to 27 and January 30 to February 1, by appointment only. Please contact Adam Dias at adias@freemansauction.com to make an appointment.
