NOTE:
Choultsé was born in St. Petersburg before establishing residency in Paris following the Russian Revolution in 1917. One of Russia's most revered painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he is best known for his ability to capture the effects of sunlight and shadow, as seen in the present work. Receiving his first formal training from the celebrated miniature painter Konstantin Krijitski, he exhibited at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Petrograd, while still in his twenties, going on to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français, Galérie Gerald Frères and the Universal Exposition in Paris. Chief amongst his many accolades was his election to serve as Czar Nicholas II's Court Painter.
