NOTE:
Isidor Kaufmann is arguably the most important painter of Rabbis and other Jewish figures - often with shtreimel, tallit, peyot, and Talmud in hand - of late 19th and early 20th century Eastern Europe. His sitters, whether from Poland, Hungary or Silesia, are rendered in a highly realistic manner, typically depicted in half-length format, and reveal the personalities of the sitters. Kaufmann began painting at age 14, studying under Joseph Matthaus Aigner and Joseph Trenkwald in Vienna, where he settled in 1876. He was awarded the Baron Konigswarter Kunstler-Preis and a gold medal at the International Exhibition, Munich amongst his other honors.
