David Webb

David Webb was born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1925. He started as an apprentice in a silversmithing workshop that belonged to his uncle, before moving to Greenwich Village in New York where he worked repairing jewelry.

Webb had a natural charisma that quickly brought him into the world of New York's social elite, where he made an acquaintance with patron Antoinette Quilleret. Quilleret gave him the financial backing for him to open his own jewelry shop in 1945, which met with quick success. Shortly afterwards, he was able to buy out Quilleret, and established David Webb Inc. in 1948.

Being self-taught, Webb had a unique style, inspired by the jewels of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, Eastern Asia, and Souther America. He moved away from the geometric style that pervaded the Art Deco era, and instead created abstract designs inspired by the natural world.

Webb is well-known for his animal-inspired motifs, which gained popularity with the social elite in the 1960's. His clientele included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor, and Ava Gardner.
