The heading inscribed in ink, "Dr. H.F. Copeland/ Whitman, Mass." on one side and "Pat. Aug 12, 1890," on the reverse.

Provenance
The flag was once owned by Dr. Horatio Franklin Copeland (1842-1918) who lived for many years on Washington Street in Whitman, Massachusetts. Copeland studied medicine at Harvard and upon graduation served as assistant physician to the U.S. 23rd Regiment Colored Infantry at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia during the last year of the Civil War.
