Harry Winston was born to Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. His father had a small jewelry business, where Harry learned the intricacies of the jewelry business. At just twelve years old, he recognized a two-carat emerald in a pawn shop, buying it for a mere 25 cents and selling it two days later for $800.
Winston started his business in 1920, and by 1926 he acquired the esteemed jewelry collection of Arabella Huntington, the wife of a railroad magnate. The collection consisted of some of the finest Parisian jewels from Cartier and other prestigious jewelry houses. In buying her collection after her death, Winston redesigned the antiquated styles into contemporary pieces, showcasing his skills as a jewelry craftsman.
In 1932, Harry Winston opened a New York storefront, rising to the upper echelon of the contemporary social scene. The business quickly grew, and in 1947 Winston earned the name "King of Diamonds", making headlines internationally. To date, the Harry Winston name is synonymous with beauty, luxury, and class.
