[Churchill, Winston]
The Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill

(London): Library of Imperial History, 1973-76. In 38 volumes. The Centenary Limited Edition. 8vo. Full red morocco, stamped in blind and in gilt, Churchill coat of arms in gilt on front boards of each volume; all edges gilt; red marbled endpapers; each in a red paper-covered levant-patterned slip case, gilt stamped with Churchill coat of arms.

"For the past several years they (the bindery) had been warehousing some 200 unbound sheets of 'Collected Essays' and about fifty sets of 'Collected Works'. The unknown New York entrepeneur had apparently bought the sheets from the receivers and had persuaded the bindery to make up 20 sets of 'Collected Works'--not in vellum but in red morocco. Although the gilt lettering and coat of arms on the books exactly matched the original, the new slipcases were red, not green, and did not carry the gilt Churchill Arms." (Langworth. A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill, p. 362-369). This set appears to be an unrecorded variant as the lettering is not the same as the vellum-bound sets and the single gilt rule around the edges on the front boards on those sets has been replaced here with a double rule in blind, perhaps bound by another bindery?

Sold for $15,000
Estimated at $8,000 - $12,000
