NOTE:
The present painting depicts a view from aboard the Royal Research Ship John Biscoe, which was a supply and research vessel used by the British Antarctic Survey. Its namesake was the British explorer and mariner John Biscoe (1794-1843), who among his many explorations circumnavigated the Antarctic from 1830 to 1833. It is mentioned by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in the foreword of the book, Her Home The Antarctic: The Royal Research Ship John Biscoe, that Edward Seago was among the Duke’s guests aboard the ship in 1956. Seago was described as being a “compulsive painter,” having painted many scenes both inside and looking out from the ship, including one of the vessel in its icy surroundings which was given to hang in the wardroom upon his departure.
