Jaeger-LeCoultre was founded by Antoine LeCoultre (1801-1881) in his family's barn in 1833. He started the first watchmaking facility in the Swiss village of Vallée de Joux, and one of the first houses to manufacture every element of the timepiece as opposed to combining parts from different specialists. In 1844, LeCoultre developed the first millionometre, a device used to measure microns, an important invention for the accuracy of movements.
In 1903 French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger joined forces with the LeCoultre family to begin to design watches that featured both Swiss engineering excellence with French aesthetic. From that point on the company has created several iconic designs such as the Reverso and Polaris.
