The Waltham Watch Company—also known as the American Watch Company—was founded in Waltham, Massachusetts the 1850s. While the Waltham Watch Company is best known for its pocket watches, it also manufactured clocks, speedometers, compasses, time delay fuses, and other precision instruments.
Seeing the need for an American alternative to the Swiss and British timepieces that dominated the United States watch industry, Waltham’s founding partners Aaron Dennison, Edward Howard, and David Davis sought to produce high-quality watches using low-cost interchangeable parts. The company developed innovated machinery that lead to some of the earliest mass productions of watches and clocks.
The Waltham Watch Company ceased production in 1957. Its historic watch manufacturing facilities have been preserved in Waltham, Massachusetts as the American Waltham Watch Company Historic District.
