(Philadelphia), July 24, 1760. 4 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. (117 x 209 mm). Manuscript receipt, in a secretarial hand, for a John Lawrence, "for the sum of two pounds ten shillings in full __ the 24 of July last, for the Gazette"; docketed on verso. Creasing from original folds, separations along same; scattered soiling.
A rare receipt for the Pennsylvania Gazette from Benjamin Franklin and David Hall's print shop, possibly made out to John Lawrence (1729-96), lawyer, mayor of Philadelphia from 1765-66, who later served as a justice on the Supreme Court from 1767 until the revolution, and was suspected of being a Loyalist and possibly imprisoned.
