Founded by 20 year old Edourad Heuer in 1860. Heuer developed the first patent covering a crown operated, keyless winding system in 1869, and followed that with an oscillating pinion for chronographs, making them functional by a click of a button in 1887. This was only the beginning of the company's fascination of chronographs and precise time telling.
In the early 20th century the company began designing precision time telling devices for athletics and racing. In 1911 Heuer developed the first "Autavia," a clock to be used in dashboards to determine travel time. Heuer developed the world's first wrist chronographs in 1914, and were continuing to work on perfecting multifunction highly accurate stop watches in 1916. As racing became more and more prominent, in 1958 the Heuer company became synonymous with the track. Their Centrigraph made in 1971 was used by Ferrari's racing team.
The Techniques d'Avant-Garde group (TAG) became the new owners of TAG Heuer in 1985 and continued to make iconic designs for diving, racing, and dinner alike. The growth of luxury watches designed by TAG Heuer caught the eye of LMVH who acquired the company in 1999. Today they remain relevant in the luxury watch market, and in 2015 designed the first luxury smart watch on the market.
