Note
After the conclusion of the Civil War, the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment was sent west to the Wyoming Territory. In 1876, the Regiment joined other infantry companies in the defense of U.S. friendly tribes, the Crow and Shoshone, against the Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne. Major engagements included the Battle of Prairie Dog Creek and the Battle of the Rosebud. In 1879, the Regiment was involved in a drawn-out and violent dispute with the Northern Utes. It required several thousand troops to quell the dispute.
