The double appliqued hand-sewn blue cotton stars enclose a hand-sewn blue cotton dove above the stenciled inscription, "Union And Liberty Forver" on a muslin canton, 13 hand-sewn and pieced cotton stripes, no sleeve or heading.

The flag was purportedly originally owned by Albert L. Hewitt (1842-1910) prior to his enlistment as a Private in Battery H, 1st Michigan Light Artillery Regiment, August 5th, 1864. The Flag was retained by the Hewitt family until the death of his son in 1973.
