H: 16 in. (stone)Property from the Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Giraud V. and Carolyn Foster, acquired prior to 1974
The figure of Buddha seated sheltered beneath a canopy of a multi-headed cobra, refers to a story where the Buddha, meditating at the sacred center of Bodhgaya, was caught in a week-long rainstorm. The serpent-king Muchalinda, impressed by the Buddha's meditation under adverse circumstances, protected the Buddha with his own body. For another example carved in stone, see the 13th century Thai sculpture in Lopburi style, illustrated and discussed in Pika Ghosh (editor), "Fashioning the Divine, South Asian Sculpture at the Ackland Art Museum", Morrisville, North Carolina, p. 2006, p.218, no 13.2
