Note
The Palaces is among Whistler's most popular, and most recognizable etchings. It is the largest of twelve works included in Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (also known as The First Venice Set), which the artist was commissioned to produce by the Fine Art Society in London in 1879. The etching was also intended to be the main feature of the series, as it encapsulates, through the gondolas, the shimmering water and the detailed gothic facades, a quintessential vision of Venice.
