The present lot is a study for the painting The Colossus of Rhodes, 1954, now in the Kunstmuseum Bern in Switzerland, which is on a similar scale to the study. The painting was one of seven Salvador Dalí created for the Lowell Thomas (1892-1981) film project Seven Wonders of the World, 1956, each depicting a different natural or built “wonder.” The present study represents the ancient statue of the Greek God Helios, God of the Sun. In the end, the paintings were not used for the film and reside in different museums and private collections around the world.
