Autograph letter, signed by Thackeray, to a Lady Elizabeth: "Anny has written to tell you how we have been abroad/and only returned on Tuesday night, When first we heard of/your affliction. You have treated me and mine with such kindness/and friendliness always, that you may be sure that we feel sympathy/at anything that causes you pleasure or grief; and at this sad time/as at all others I am sure you will believe that I am/most sincerely your,/W. M. Thackeray." Creasing from original fold. Lot includes an original pen and ink drawing, initialed "W.M.T." in pencil at bottom right, as well as a carte de visite portrait of Thackeray.
"Anny", refers to Thackeray's eldest daughter, Anne Isabella, Lady Ritchie, nee Thackeray (1837-1919), and Lady Elizabeth, presumably refers to Lady Elizabeth Mary Carnegie (1798-1886), who married Thackeray's distant cousin, Frederic Rennell Thackeray (1775-1860).
