A handsome third octavo edition of John James Audubon's (1785-1851) last great work. Originally issued in folio in 30 parts under the title, The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (1845-1848), it was followed by three smaller and less expensive octavo editions. The first was issued in 31 parts from 1849-54; the second edition, in 1854; and this third octavo edition in the late 1850s. This edition was the last to be produced by the Audubon family before George R. Lockwood took over publication of Audubon's works from his sons, Victor Gifford and John Woodhouse Audubon.
