Plate CCLXXXVIII from Audubon's The Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict one bird, on the grassy bank of a stream that leads into a small lake, all surrounded by trees. This is a lovely scene in South Carolina. Probably painted in 1832." (Susanne M. Low, A Guide to Audubon's Birds of America, p. 154). The marshy habitat is the work of Audubon's assistant, George Lehman.
A lovely copy.
