Washington, D.C.: United States Hydrographic Office, et al., ca. 1942-44. 19 United States government-issued silk survival maps, measuring wind and ocean currents in various areas of the Pacific Theater, and includng detailed sections of Japan, China, USSR, and numerous islands, including Hawaii, the Philippines, New Guinea, Fiji, The Marshall Islands, New Hebrides, etc. Scattered minor wear, otherwise in excellent condition. Measuring 12 1/2 x 15 3/8 in. (32 x 39 cm)-40 x 34 1/4 in. (102 x 87 cm).
These lightweight, waterproof, and easily storable maps were issued by the United States Air and Army Forces to pilots and flight personnel in event of a crash landing over water and/or land during wartime. Finely detailing water currents, wind patterns, and distances between islands, these maps were key to increasing the odds of survival and recovery.
