35 1/2 in. x 27 1/2 in. (sight)Born in Philadelphia, John Dunlap, Jr. (1785-1856) was the son of renowned American printer John Dunlap, Sr. (1747-1812). In 1771, Dunlap, Sr. published the weekly newspaperThe Pennsylvania Packet or The General Advertiser, which later, in 1784, became the successful daily North American and United States Gazette. Dunlap printed much of Pennsylvania's colonial currency, but his most significant commission came in 1776, when he was asked to print the first broadside copies of the United States Declaration of Independence. He also printed the Journals of the Continental Congress for two years. Dunlap married Elizabeth Hayes Ellison (1746-1836) in 1773. Based on correspondence from John Dunlap, Sr., the landscape in the portrait's background may represent the 131,000 acres of land in Kentucky purchased by Dunlap in 1788.
