The popularity of William Birch's famous portfolio of Philadelphia views "The City of Philadelphia", prompted him to consider making a similar set of views of New York City. He created this large format view to promote the new venture, intending it "as elegant furniture for a drawing or setting room", but due to financial concerns the portfolio was never executed. William H. Morgan acquired the plate around 1820 and reprinted it.
