A rare view of early New York looking north from the intersection of Broadway and Fulton Street toward City Hall. By the 1820s this area had become a popular shopping area for New York's elite. This plate is from Klinckowstrom's important and rare book of views, Bref om de Forenta Staterna forfattade under resa till Amerika... (Stockholm, 1824).
"One of the European artists to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for their skillful rendering of scenes in the young American republic is Baron Axel Leonhard Klinckowstrom. A Swedish aristocrat, Klinckowstrom spent three years in the United States (1818-20) as an official emissary of his country, traveling widely and taking a lively interest in all he saw. His published letters and his atlas of handsome views are among the more exceptional works of illustrated American travel." (Deak 310)
