Note
Few of Julius LeBlanc Steward's early works from the 1870s still survive. The present work is the second known painting Stewart did while working under Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta's (1841-1920) supervision, following an Oriental Still Life from 1872. As explained by Ulrich W. Hiesinger: "From 1875 comes Stewart's earliest known complete figure study, a canvas representing a young girl in peasant costume, the so-called Spanish Girl. It is a familiar costume piece suitable to a studio environment but already demonstrates considerable independence in its strong characterization of the model and vigorous handling of paint."
