Polk Atty for Pltff"), recording that he received from Sheriff Nimrod Porter the sum of $206.98, for "the principle interest, also my tax fees.", additional transactions recorded on same. Creasing from original folds; tape remnants from old mount on right side recto. Lot includes an engraved portrait of Polk.
A rare court document, signed by future eleventh president, James K. Polk (1795-1849), during his time as a lawyer in Maury County, Tennessee, and also while serving as chief clerk of the state senate (1821-23), and three years before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Polk was a successful lawyer in Maury County before devoting his career to politics, gaining much work due to the Panic of 1819.
