NOTE:
James Peale Sr. is considered the founder of the Philadelphia still life tradition. The younger brother of Charles Willson Peale, he gave up painting miniatures in 1810 due to failing eyesight. The date marked his turn to still-lifes and portraits that were widely exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and elsewhere on the East Coast.
