Note
The map was originally offered in the front cover pocket of the 400 page geographical history, Joseph and James Churchman, Rudiments of National Knowledge, Presented to the Youth of the United States And To Enquiring Foreigners (1833).
Joseph Churchman, a Chester County surveyor, felt that his publication would enourage national unity by the study of American history through the use of maps. He strengthened his intent with the inclusion of the Eagle Map. The map, with the figure of an American Eagle superimposed over the extent of the United States in 1832, served as a permanent reminder that national interests should always outweigh state or regional interests.
