sheet: 6 1/16 x 8 1/8 in. (15.3 x 20.7cm)
[Lennox-Boyd, 77; Taylor, 8]
Provenance: William Weston Gallery, London, United Kingdom.
Jeffrey M. Kaplan, Washington, D.C. (acquired directly from the above in 1989).
note:
The animal depicted in this print was initially said to be Lord Pigot's cheetah, but in fact its spotting is more consistent with those of a leopard. The present work is one of only two images Stubbs chose to render in mezzotint, a medium that is uniquely suited to capture the rich, velvety blacks of the background and subject's fur.
