Jose Hess

Josef Hess was born in 1935 in Germany to a German Jewish family. They quickly fled Nazi Germany and migrated to Colombia, South America, where an immigration officer wrote his name as Jose, the name Hess would use for the rest of his life.

At age 14, Hess found a job sweeping the shop floor of a goldsmith, working his way to becoming an apprentice. It was here that Hess learned to melt gold, set gemstones, and craft jewelry by hand. Hess immigrated to the United States at age 17, finding work in various areas of the jewelry industry. He educated himself at the Mechanics Institute of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen and took courses at the Gemological Institute of America in New York City.

He was designing jewelry for a number of jewelers, but most were unwilling to sell the pieces under his name. That was why in 1958, he decided to set out on his own, prioritizing the importance of branding and advertising in building a name for himself.

Over the years, Hess worked with high-profile celebrities, creating one of a kind pieces in exquisite designs. Hess' work is notable for its sophistication, versatility, and quality craftsmanship.
