NOTE:
A genre painter originally from England, Brown painted many scenes of street children, capturing the spirit of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps. Brown claimed that he was a poor lad once, like his subjects. These scenes were extremely popular and often reproduced as lithographs. In addition to the street urchins, Brown liked to paint rural farm scenes like his contemporaries Winslow Homer and Eastman Johnson.
