Manuscript Report Signed by Colonel H.K. Graig to Jefferson Davis, The U.S. Secretary of War. Having reviewed the charges against the Military Storekeeper A. Newman by order of the Army Judge Advocate, Colonel Graig recommends that Newman be exonerated and allowed to retain his position. The autograph endorsements of Graig’s recommendations by U.S. President Franklin Pierce and Jefferson Davis are entered on the verso of the 2nd. sheet of Graig’s report. Pierce’s autograph 10 short-line endorsement is initialed, “F. P,” and undated, it begins, “ Let further proceedings in this case be suspended...” Davis’s autograph 23 short-line endorsement is signed, “ Jefferson Davis,” and dated January 18, 1856, it begins, “I concur in the opinion and recommendations...”
