The present painting represents a battle fought August 9 and 10, 1877, between the United States troops and Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce Indians. The Big Hole Battlefield National Monument, which spans 200 acres, is in southwestern Montana, and was established in 1910.
This lot will be accompanied by a copy of the original Harper's Weekly for which it was the cover illustration.
