Alexander Hamilton gives instructions to the Commissioners of the Revenue implementing a system of record sharing
(Philadelphia): Treasury Department, April 29, 1793. One sheet, 9 7/16 x 7 13/16 in. (240 x 198mm). Printed Treasury Department Circular, issued and signed by Alexander Hamilton as first Secretary of the Treasury, to the Commissioners of the Revenue regarding the establishment of a system for the regular transmission of "certain documents, respecting commerce, navigation, and manufactures," as well as the transmission of the quarterly "Return of Exports" report, to be sent to the Commissioner of Revenue. Hamilton further stipulates, "It is also my request, that you furnish him from time to time with such other papers and pieces containing information relative to those objects, arising from materials in your office, or matters under your immediate observation, as he may desire. This, however, is not meant to include any official returns or documents which you have been or shall be directed to transmit to any other office of this Department." Docketed on verso in an unknown hand. Creasing from original folds; small crease along top right edge; separation along top left side fold. A fine example.
This rare circular--we cannot locate another example in the auction record—attests to Hamilton's professional acumen as he led the Treasury Department. Here he implements a system of record sharing in the department.
