Artist Biography
Born in 1934 in Unionpolis, Ohio, Jack Earle earned his BFA from Bluffton College in 1956 and his MFA in ceramics from the Ohio State University in 1964. Earl taught at the Art Institute at the Toledo Museum of Art and Virginia Commonwealth University. Whilst teaching in Virginia, Earl was the first artist in residence at the Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, funded through the National Endowment for the Arts in 1974. He was subsequently invited back for a second residency in 1976. Earl has also received recognition from the American Craft Council and the Ohio Arts Council. Known for drawing inspiration from his home state of Ohio, Earl’s ceramic sculptures depict everyday mundane adventures in rural America. Earl’s work can be found in numerous private collections and institutions such as the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C, the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California.
