This well known model of the Duke of Wellington by Edmund Cotterill is occasionally seen in bronze, but original silver models produced by Garrard, for whom this sculpture was first designed, are exceedingly rare. One such example was owned by the Duke of Wellington himself and prominently displayed in his London residence, Apsley House. Edmund Cotterill was a highly successful sculptor of the Royal Academy, and the early Victorian period in which the present lot was produced is considered the height of both Cotterill's and Garrard's prowess, largely due to the success Garrard experienced from the exceptional designs Cotterill executed for the firm at this time.
