With 20 stipple engraved plates most after Francis Hayman, including 3 frontispiece portraits of Milton by diverse hands. Complete with The List of Subscribers in Volume I of Paradise Lost, The Prince & Princess of Wales at the head of the list. Bound in uniform 18th-century full gilt-paneled diced brown calf, richly gilt foliate spine compartments, geometrically gilt decorated cover edges, all edges gilt, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers; lightly rubbed but attractive, intact bindings; some light offsetting from plates and scattered light foxing; title page and frontispiece portrait of Paradise Regain'd with light foxing and offsetting, light foxing to the plates in that volume, a few leaves with minor damp staining; Paradise Lost volumes with plates and text generally clean. With the early 19th-century ink ownership of Dr. Woodward and his ink manuscript notes on the front blanks of the first volume of Paradise Lost, on several tipped in sheets, and on several text margins, all relating to Milton and his works. With the armorial bookplate of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salmons on the front paste downs.
