Thirtieth president Calvin Coolidge writes to stockbroker and co-founder of Merrill Lynch, Charles E. Merrill, introducing him to farmer John Walter Coverdale, suggesting that Merrill can lend guidance to Coverdale in alleviating "farm problems" in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: "This will introduce to you Mr. J.W. Coverdale...who is engaged in trying to help the farmers and find some solution for farm problems. His proposals are so analagous to some of the commercial plans which I understand you have been engaged in, that I told him I was going to ask you as a matter of public service if you would look into his proposals with him, as you might be able to make some very valuable suggestions..."
