London, 1703. First English edition, second edition overall. Folio. Leaf size 280x178mm., a few heads close shaved, 16 leaves, A-H 2, [1], 2-31[32]pp. Bound in modern three-quarter green morocco over cloth, tightly sewn in its modern binding obscuring some text near gutter, several gatherines with some toning and light soiling, dampstaining to final leaves. Howes B256; Church 809; see Church 802 Bayard, New York mayor in 1685, was accused of treason by political enemies, sentenced to death and saved only by the Crown's decree that the proceedings were illegal. The narrative of the proceedings throws a strong light on the fractious political life of the times. The London edition of 1703 is a reprint of the NewYork edition of 1702, the London edition contains additional material including the petition to the King, and an account of Bayard's treatment from the time that sentence was passed against him.
