Auction: September 19, 2019 11:00:00 AM EDT
London: Frederick Warne, 1889. First edition. 8vo. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Hazlitt and original tissue guard. From the library of Robert Louis Stevenson and with his Vailima book-plate on front paste-down, inscribed to him by the editor: "To Robert Louis Stevenson Esq/with Alex Ireland's/cordial regards & remembrances/Southport/9/Leicester St./October 2, 1889." Publisher's green cloth, decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, lightly rubbed to extremities and with some wear to spine ends; light foxing to frontispiece and title page. Also with the ownership signature of Isobel Strong, Stevenson's stepdaughter. A lovely presentation. Stevenson's admiration of William Hazlitt's prose style is well documented in his own writings ("Walking Tours") and elsewhere. .
