Note: Founded in Buffalo, New York, the Free Soil Party was short lived, 1848 to 1854. The Party opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories, but believed that the government could not abolish slavery where it already existed. "Free Soilers" feared and resented the potential competition of a black labor force in the new territories. Their ironic slogan was "Free soil, Free speech, Free labor and Free men."
